Pros and Cons of Animal Dissection
There is debate in high schools and colleges about the use of animals in animal dissection. People against using animals point out how cruel the practice is to use animals. People that are for animal dissection point out the hands-on experience is the best way to learn.
I am a hands-on learner. I learn best by being able to physically experience something. Participants in a random study of 400 students indicated that the majority of students surveyed (71%) perceived the real dissection experience to be more useful than the virtual dissection experience. Even though the majority of students had access to the Internet, a significant number of students did not use any of the computer resources provided. The use of the virtual resources was not compulsory.
Although opponents of animal dissection point out the cruelty to animals, I believe the benefits outweigh the negatives. Studies point out the fact that students retain 90% of what they physically perform and only 10% of what they see and hear. The hands-on experience is not matched with visual alternative. I personally prefer the hands-on experience because I learn better that way.
