Gametogenesis and Stem Cell Research

by

The article "Nuclear Transplantation, Embryonic Stem Cells, and the Potential for Cell Therapy" that we read explains the research and current limitations for stem cell research, and whether we can replicate human cells or "clone" them, and/or clone an entire living being. The researchers found that while a cloned being, a mouse for example, had several limitations and health problems, replicating or growing certain specific cells for specific purposes has shown a lot of promise. Much is left to be done, however.

My view on stem cell research is that we should continue to research and try new methods that can be beneficial to humans and help cure diseases or genetic defects. As long as the methods are safe, or as long as the person knows the methods are currently experimental, then I see no problem with it. I do not believe it is "playing God" any more than any of the other medical advances that we use for fertility treatments, surgeries, and many life-saving interventions.
