Stroke - Lab 6
A stroke is cause by lack of blood flow to a portion of the brain. A blood vessel is clogged therefore, whichever section that vessel was leading to is not receiving oxygen. There are different types of stroke. One kind of stroke is the ischemic stroke which is a blockage in the vessel. Another kind of stroke is where a blood vessel ruptures. This would be classified as a hemorrhagic stroke, while if a blood clot is temporary that is a mini stroke. I have met two stroke survivors in my life personally and the recovery, if it doesn't kill you, is painful and you can lose the functions of portions of your body. Symptoms of stroke range from person to person. Signs include trouble seeing, speaking, or functioning, especially if it is with one specific side of body.
The treatments for stroke range depending on what type of stroke you have had and the severity. You will likely experience lasting effects which they follow with physical therapy. Some treatments for stroke include medicine, a preventative method to keep them from occurring. There are IV medications that can be administered in the moment of a current stroke, and there are also surgeries preformed on the portion of your brain that is blocked to clear blockage.
If you have had a stroke you are more likely to get another one. For that reason, following up with rehabilitation is important. Age is a big part of what makes you at risk for having a stroke. Those who are overweight, have high blood pressure, smoke or have diabetes are also at a higher risk for having strokes. Fat can block your arteries. Strokes are also genetic, so if you have previously heard of family having had a stroke make sure you watch for signs. If you keep a physically active, healthy diet, and stay smoke free you will lower you risk of having a stroke.
