The digestive disorder that I have chosen would be Gastroparesis which is also referred to as delayed stomach emptying. I decided to pick this disease because when I was a freshman in high school I was diagnosed with it. When you have Gastroparesis it will cause your stomach to become unable to empty itself properly normally. This diseases is rare and can sometimes be difficult to manage. You are unable to be cured from this condition.
The first thing one can do to try and manage the illness would be to change the foods you eat, foods that trigger the disease should be avoided. The triggers that I had when first diagnosed were fiber, dairy, gluten, and fat. Metoclopramide and Erythtomycin are common medicine that are prescribed to people diagnosed with Gastroparesis, they are to help push the food through the stomach and intestines. Other drugs such as Ondansetron and Prochlorperazine are used to treat the nausea that can occur often. If it progresses to a certain point you may have to undergo surgery to remove some parts of your organs may have died off, sometimes the entire organ having to get your nutrients from a feeding tube.
Even though 1 in 4 people feel the symptoms of this disease it is very rare and not many people are diagnosed with it. If you were to survey 100,000 people about 10 men would have it and around 40 women. 80% of the cases are women. Sometimes you can get Gastroparesis after you undergo surgery. It can also be a side effect of diabetes as well.
