Microscopic Colitis
By: Kaela Borders
Microscopic colitis is inflammation of the colon that can cause watery diarrhea. It is referred to as microscopic because the colon tissue must be looked at under a microscope. This disease is diagnosed by a person receiving a colonoscopy or flexible sigmoidoscopy. There are different types of microscopic colitis such as collagenous, lymphocytic and incomplete colitis. There are also different phases of the same condition. Some symptoms include weight loss, nausea, abdominal pain and fecal incontinence. Some treatments for this disease include eating a low-fat high fiber diet, avoiding caffeine and sugar, stopping any medication that could have caused symptoms. There are also medications that can be prescribed that include but are not limited to steroids, anti-inflammatory medications, anti-diarrheal medications and TNF inhibitors.
