TUBERCULOSIS:

-Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease that is spread from person to person by coughs and sneezes through the air. Although it CAN be spread, it doesn’t happen often because someone needs to be in close proximity to an infected person for a long period of time. There is a big difference between people who have latent TB and active TB. Latent TB means that someone might have the germ or the bacteria in their body, but their immune system is protecting them, so they are not sick from the bacteria. Active TB, however, means that someone is actually sick with the disease and showing symptoms. The bacteria has settled in their lungs and begun to multiply and attack the tissue in the lungs, or even the lymph nodes, bones, kidney, brain, spine, or skin. The bacteria then moves through the blood to different parts of the body. Symptoms include cough, loss of weight and appetite, fever, chills. It also will affect organs or organ systems.

-Some types of tuberculosis are drug-resistant. However, the treatment for typical TB is a 6 month course of 4 antimicrobial drugs.

-In terms of statistics. About 1.4 billion people in the world are currently infected with tuberculosis. Of this number, about 10 million people have active TB. People with HIV are 19 times more likely to develop active TB compared to people without HIV.
