Ulcerative Colitis- Matthew Iverson

Page history last edited by Matthew Iverson 4 years, 2 months ago

Ulcerative Colitis is a disease that causes chronic inflammation in the large intestine.

It also causes sores (ulcers) on the inner layer of the colon and rectum.

It does not come on suddenly, it progresses over time until it is diagnosed and treated.

The disease can be anywhere from mild to severe and can, at times be deadly.

This disorder does not have a cure but, there are many treatment options available such as, medication, diet change, and surgery.

It must be diagnosed by a doctor before you can receive treatment. The first test by the doctor is done via blood and/or stool sample.

The next step would usually be a X-Ray or CT Scan, then finally a colonoscopy for confirmation.

Ulcerative Colitis, or aka UC is a somewhat rare disorder. It is somewhat hereditary, and chances of development can increase by up to 30%, if a family member has it.

Roughly 750k people currently live with this condition in North America, or 1.3% or our adult population.

There is data that shows people more likely to have this condition are from the U.S. compared to those born in another country.

Also, if you are over 45 years old, of Hispanic origin and/or come from poverty you may also be more at risk.
