Being only about the same size as a fist the spleen is located in the abdomen. The blood in your body is sent through this organ to be filtered, this is the largest lymphoid organ within the human body. The histological make up and embryological development makes the spleen different when being compared to the other lymphoid organs.

All the jobs the spleen has would be to filter the blood, maintaining immune response, and recycling iron. It can also hold extra blood as well in certain situations such as blood loss. Sometimes hematopeisis is performed there instead of inside the bone marrow. Contrary to all the important things the spleen does for the human body you are actually able to function just fine without one.

The main parts of the spleen would be the red pulp and the white pulp. The red pulp occupies a lot of the stromal tissue in the spleen. The white pulp is made up of 3 components- the inner layer, the outer layer and lymphatic follicles.
