-The STOMACH is an expandable, muscular bag that keeps swallowed food inside. It is part of the GI system. It is the place where food begins to be digested and absorbed. Food is broken down in the stomach in two ways-chemically, with gastric juice and mechanically, by muscle contraction. At the end, the broken up food that is left is called chyme.
-The stomach is made up of 3 regions: cardiac (glands that secrete mucus), fundus (gastric glands), and pyloric (2 types of mucus and hormone called gastrin). When the chyme (broken up food) reaches the pyloric region, it is released into the duodenum.
-The stomach has 3 different layers. The first is the mucosa, which is made of closely packed tubular glands. The second is the submucosa, which doesn’t have much of a job. The third is the muscularis externa, with two distinct layers of smooth muscle fibers.
