Element Lab 1

The chemical element Krypton has the symbol Kr and its atomic number is 36. The atomic mass of krypton is 83.8 atomic mass units. The atom contains 36 electrons and 48 neutrons. The atom doesn’t have a color, odor, and/or taste. The melting point of krypton is - 157 °C and the boiling point is - 153° C. The atom is a noble gas that traceable in the atmosphere and it usually combined with other gases in fluorescent lamps. Krypton was by William Ramsay and Morris Travers in leftover residue after all components of liquid air were evaporated.

Krypton as a noble gas is considered to be “chemically highly unreactive”. But it does react to the fluoride gas and combined the gases create krypton difluoride. Krypton is also combined with argon to in electric light bulbs. When the krypton gas is inside a krypton fluoride laser it sucks up energy from whatever source its inside of. Thereafter, krypton reacts to fluoride gas to develop (Kr + F2) à KrF2. The white discharge that krypton is used in paints or paint stains to achieve to make a color neon (i.e. red neon).

The gas makes for good use in the flashing red airport runway lights. The importance of Krypton in regard to the human body, the gas is not to be inhaled. The gas is considered non-toxic but, it is an asphyxiant. Any gas that is considered an asphyxiant is known to take the oxygen out of the air. So, large concentrations of krypton can cause to dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and loss of consciousness. If anyone were to die from the asphyxiant gas it will most likely be due to the loss of judgment, confusion, and/or loss of consciousness. This gas is known to remove 75% of the regular amount of air. It takes about 50% of the air to be filled with krypton for the symptoms to settle in. And death can occur with the air is concentrated at 75%.
