Lab 1-Oxygen
By Kelsey Messerole
-The element of OXYGEN was discovered in 1608 by a Dutch inventor, but not officially identified until 1774 by Joseph Priestly in England. Its chemical symbol on the periodic table is “O”. It began to accumulate in the atmosphere about 2.5 billion years ago, due to algae forming on Earth.
-Oxygen is the 8th element on the periodic table. It has an atomic number of 8, an atomic mass of 15.999, 8 electrons, and 8 neutrons. It is usually colorless, odorless gas, but if it is cooled down to -279.3º F it turns to a pale blue liquid.
-Living things use oxygen for respiration. It takes up about 21% of the atmosphere. It is soluble in water, so it makes it possible for things to live in lakes, rivers, oceans, etc. Oxygen is also used in multiple industries-like steel, chemical manufacturing, sewage, and more.
