Neon

by Taricka

Neon(Ne) is a chemical element that was discovered in 1898 by Sir William Ramsay and Morris Travers. The atomic number is 10, 20.180 for atomic mass and 2 electrons with 8 neurons. . As guessed, neon is used to provide neon signs that are usually advertised in stores, bars and even used in thing like lasers and driving equipment because of the high-voltage it can provide. The meaning of the word neon(neos) is "new" according the Greek language. In Paris of 1912, the first ever neon signed was used in a barbershop.

Behavior: Neon is a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas that doesn't react to any other substances. When talking about noble gasses neon come in second as the lightest after Helium. Under pressure neon glows bright orange-red if electric current is present causes the neon atoms to break apart, combine parts and give off that neon light that is well known. Neon is noted have the lowest liquid range as neon could turn from gas to liquid with a temperature of -249C with dealing with cryogenic refrigerant.Neon can get 40 times more colder capacity compared to helium. Neon can be found in the air and it is possible to collect from air by fractional distillation.

Importance: Neon has been highly used in the world and has became very important. As of today neon is ranked number 5 as the most abundant element in the universe. Neon is heavily used in today's world. Restaurants, stores and companies are most responsible for the most use of neon. Neon provides interest to many situation as in playing laser tag, street signs and parties that has neon lights or LED lights. Neon is dangerous to the human body to consume as it can cause asphyxiate but it it completely harmless to the environment because it has no compounds and non-toxic.
