The Role of The Lungs in Acid Based Homeostasis

     Acid-base homeostasis and pH regulation are essentials elements for cell metabolism and function.The Lungs play a very essential and vital role in helping the body maintain a healthy pH level of 7.36 to 7.44, by releasing carbon dioxide. The Carbon dioxide that is released is slightly acidic and is a product of the metabolism of nutrients and oxygen that is being produced throughout the cells. The Carbon Dioxide then travels from the cells to the blood. The blood then takes the CO2 to the lungs, where it is the exhaled. As carbon dioxide builds up throughout the blood, the pH of the blood goes down. Factors that influence the Acid Based homeostasis could be not breathing correctly, hyperventilating, and inhaling certain gases.
