Lab 7: Kyphosis

Kyphosis, most commonly called hunchack is a forward rounding of the back. It is more common in older aged women. It is due to weakness in the spinal bones that can cause them to crack. Mild kyphosis may cause few problems and have no symptoms while severe kyphosis can cause extreme pain and a disfiguring look. Some people do have back pain and stiffness with a curved spine.
Trying to have proper posture and exercises that may strengthen the back and neck. It can help relieve the pain a little and give your spine a break. Medicine tends to be prescribed to help with pain. Osteoporosis medications can be given to help strengthen the bones from cracking. Chiropractic care is another way to treat kyphosis. Surgery may be needed to help kyphosis if severe enough.
There are two kinds of kyphosis, postural and structural. Between 20 and 40 percent of elderly experience kyphosis. Studies showed that progression of kyphosis in women aged 50-59 was slowed after 1 year of exercise while women who did not do the exercises progressed. Kyphosis can appear in children, but chances are fairly much smaller.
